Compare old and antique maps of England with state of the art software maps and see how the counties of Britain have changed through history. Many British County names end with 'shire'. Shire actually means county. The old English or Anglo-Saxon for Shire is scir. The head of a Shire was a Reev, Shire-Reev became Sherrif. Shires were divided into Hundreds (or Wapantakes) and many areas throughout England are still called Hundreds. Old maps and historical records, ancient documents etc will refer to these terms. Hundreds were divided into Tithes or Tithings, these were tenths of a hundred.
The modern equivalent of Shires, Hundreds and Tithes are Counties, Cities and Towns.
